Leeds City Tag qualifiers return after Easter Break with tournament at Horsforth High School

St Mary's Catholic School in Horseforth were one of the teams to progress to the finals in May

The Leeds Rhinos Foundation returned from the Easter break to host another qualifying round of the Leeds city tag tournament for the Leeds North West Sports Partnership at Horsforth High School, with two teams qualifying for the city wide finals at the John Charles Centre for Sport in May.

Staff from the Leeds Rhinos Foundation worked alongside School Games Organiser Natalie Mallinson to deliver the tournament in which 10 school teams took part in and putting on another great day of Tag Rugby League.

The Year 5/6 pupils played all afternoon in a fun safe environment in glorious sunshine with the 10 schools  showing a great enthusiasm for the game and displaying some fantastic skills throughout the afternoon.

The festival format followed the model used in the tournaments that proceeded the Easter break with the teams playing in a league format before progressing to a play-off situation and overall final to decide a winner on the day.

St Mary’s Primary School and Rawdon St Peters Primary School progressed to the final of the competition on the day with St Marys Primary taking the overall winners accolade with a 2 tries to 1 victory.

Both finalists on the day will now go onto play in the City Wide Tag Tournament Final which will be based at the John Charles Centre for Sport and takes place in May representing North West Leeds with the two schools that qualified from the other North West tournament which took place before the Easter break at Guisleley Rangers ARLFC.

Leeds Rhinos Community Manager; Jonny Wainhouse commented

“The partnerships we have with School Games Organisers and schools in general are crucial for the development of the rugby league. That was evident today with 10 local school teams attending this event which will hopefully encourage more children to play the game.

"We would like to say a massive thank you to the teachers who brought the children, Horsforth High School for freeing up their facilities at short notice and one last thank you to Natalie Mallinson who went out of her way to engage as many schools as possible into this event.”
