Leeds Rhinos Foundation Further & Higher Education Development Officer Russell Parker’s Leeds City College team took another step in their quest for the Yorkshire Division League title with a 48-24 win on the road against Kirklees College last week to go top of the table after five games.
With a win against Newcastle Thunder Academy and three automatic wins against Wiberforce College and Leeds College of Building Hawks so far in the 2016 campaign, Leeds City College went into the game knowing a comfortable win would see them go top of the league after five games.
On the day an understrength Kirklees College team put in a valiant performance against an undefeated Leeds City College Rugby League Academy in what proved to be an extremely entertaining game.
Leeds City College opened the scoring with two long range tries from the elusive Ousman Sanneh and a great team effort from Liam English, before Prop forward Kieren Sands crossed to give his side a comfortable early lead.
It was Kirklees College who hit back however, with a mini revival that saw them score two tries of their own to pull themselves back into the game, but before the hosts could score again to bring the game even closer, Leeds City College regained their composure and struck back with touchdowns from Luke Wager and James Olbison to go into the break with a 8–26 lead.
A fairly even second half saw both teams exchange scores, first through Leeds City College's lively full back Liam English, crossing for his second before, Kirklees then had their best spell in the game scoring back to back tries to give them some hope with twenty minutes remaining.
Despite another comeback attempt from Kirklees College, in determined fashion, Leeds City College finally showed their dominance sealing a satisfying away victory with scores from Ryan Kalinda, Ousman Sanneh and Josh Bowers.
Head Coach Russell Parker said:
“Some great individual tries from both teams were the highlight of today’s game”
Leeds City College continue their title challenge with a home game against St Marys of Hull on Wednesday 23rd March.
