Leeds Rhinos Foundation Further & Higher Education Development Officer Russell Parker’s Leeds City College team continued their impressive home form with a 34 – 6 victory over Newcastle Thunder Academy in the Yorkshire Division 2016 League Competition to get the new campaign off to a strong start.

After losing out in the College Regional Cup Quarter Final last week to a good Huddersfield New College side, Leeds City College bounced back in emphatic style with a six tries to one resounding victory at the home of North Leeds Leopards ARLFC.

In heavy conditions, a big Newcastle pack tried to impose themselves in the game but came up against a Leeds team in determined mood, who started the scoring with a trio of first half tries.

Winger Ousman Sanneh opened the scoring for Leeds City College after receiving a pin point pass from scrum half Jack Carrol before Brandon Tester crashed over from close range for Leeds City College, followed by a solo effort from Carrol who neatly gathered his own kick to score a try of his own.

With all the goal kicks successful, Leeds City College took an 18 – 0 advantage into the break.

Newcastle started the second half strongly and scored after a prolonged period of pressure near the home teams line but Leeds City College rallied again through Ousman Sanneh who scored his second of the game before Loose Forward Connor Wood, who was outstanding on the day, added another score.

Right Winger Thomas Hutchinson then rounded off the performance, scoring the last Leeds City College try when collecting an interception pass near the halfway line.

Leeds City College Captain Connor Wood summed up the victory stating:

“It was a great team effort, everyone worked really hard for the win”.

Leeds City College next host Wilberforce College, who Leeds beat 70-0 back in October in the Yorkshire Division 1 competition and will be hoping for a similar score next Wednesday as they look to climb the division.

Leeds City College Coach Russell Parker would like to thank North Leeds Leopards for hosting the fixture as the game only went ahead after the club kindly lent the College their facilities as the City still deals with unfit pitches.
