The announcement of Leeds Rhinos’ 30-man squad for the 2017 season was another success story for Leeds community clubs, with three more players from local clubs being given their chance to play for the Super League side.

Josh Jordan Roberts, Mikolaj Oledski and Sam Hallas who played for Stanningley ARLFC, East Leeds, Hunslet Warriors and Oulton Raiders were all named in the squad for the upcoming Bet Fred Super League Season, which now brings the total number of players from the city’s community club system now playing for the Rhinos to 13.

Community Clubs Development Officer for the Leeds Rhinos Foundation, Sam Horner, said their promotion to the first team is a huge credit to the coaches who have worked with them throughout their development.

“We have great links with the city’s community clubs through our Ambassador scheme and we know the fantastic work they do to develop players.  It’s wonderful to see these players coming through the academy ranks and signing first team contracts, especially those who are products from the city’s community clubs,” said Horner.

“Through our Rugby League Development Plan, supported by Mears, we aim to support players through all stages of their development.

Josh Jordan-Roberts, for example, has a long association with Leeds Rhinos Foundation and received coaching at Whitkirk Primary and then at Temple Moor High School and he also attended our rugby camps.”

Leeds Rhinos Foundation are committed to supporting the continued growth of the game and now have four dedicated members of staff working in all areas of the city, delivering coaching in schools and clubs to ensure all children have an opportunity to play the game.

Leeds now has over 30 community clubs, if you would like more information on your local team and how to get involved contact Sam.Horner@leedsrhinosfoundation.org
