Girls RL continues to flourish in Leeds as first girls team set to launch in the north of the city

Be part of a new girls Rugby League team at Headingley Hawks

Leeds Rhinos Foundation is continuing to support the growth of Rugby League through their Rugby League Development Plan, sponsored by Mears, and next month they will be helping the launch of a new girls Rugby League team by hosting an Under-12s launch night with Ambassador club Headingley Hawks.

The new team due to start officially in September, will be the first girls age group at the club who currently operate boys age groups at Under-14s and 15s.

By launching the new team, the Hawks will also become the first team in the north of the city to encompass a girls section, joining six other ambassador clubs in the city including East Leeds, West Leeds, Hunslet Warriors, Oulton and Farnley Falcons to incorporate a girl’s age group.

Leeds Rhinos Foundation has been working with schools in the north of the city since 2013 as part of the charity's Rugby League Development Plan to promote rugby league participation in the sport through Women and Girls Development Officer, Lois Forsell.

Forsell, who started at East Leeds before going onto become an England International commented on the need for a team in the North of the city: “Having seen the strength of some of the schools now in the North, it is really exciting to have an ambassador club launching a girl’s section for the new season.

“There is a definite need to have a club nearer to the schools of the girls we have been working with and with Headingley Hawks, starting their new under 12s, we are now able to direct girls interested to a new team in their area of the city.”
