Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s health team will be working with partner Yorkshire Cancer Research on 16th November, supporting the charity’s Life with Cancer 2017 event at Harrogate Convention Centre.
Leeds Rhinos’ official charity teamed up with Yorkshire Cancer Research in March 2017 offering an initial Active Beyond Cancer pilot programme for women at different stages of cancer treatment to receive free health and fitness coaching along with advice to help them increase their physical activity and improve their confidence to aid recovery.
Since the initial pilot programme, Active Beyond Cancer has been expanded and is now offered at Armley, Rothwell and Fearnville leisure centres with classes for both men and women as the charities aim to provide the service for more people in the county.
With currently about 195,000 people in Yorkshire living with or beyond a cancer diagnosis, and numbers expected to reach as many as 300,000 people by 2030, the two charities are also working together to undertake community health checks at matches, provide education in schools and raise awareness of the importance of the prevention and early diagnosis of cancer among the community.
The partnership will now see Leeds Rhinos Foundation support Yorkshire Cancer Research at the charity’s Life with Cancer event in November, providing healthy nutrition advice and taster 'introduction to exercise' workshops throughout the day as part of the event.
The free event is a day for people across Yorkshire affected by cancer to come and get advice and information by speaking to experts, local support services and other organisations.
There will also be the opportunity for people attending to contribute to future research ideas and offer feedback and suggestions on what would make a difference to cancer sufferers as well as, a chance to contribute to Yorkshire Cancer Research’s new online resource of “top tips” to help other patients.
