Farnley Falcons looking to soar high with new girls’ team

As we celebrate the achievements of women and girl’s across the county this week as part of #WomensSportWeek, local Ambassador Club Farnley Falcons will be hoping to build on the successful launch of their first ever girls’ team last week supported by the Leeds Rhinos Foundation

The West Leeds club launched their new girls section with 16 new players turning up for the opening night taster session, delivered by England International and Rugby League Development Officer Lois Forsell.

The session was advertised on the back of coaching delivered by Lois in primary and secondary schools in the area involving girls from school years 6-9, who will continue to train every Thursday as part of the club’s new girls team.

Founded in 2005, Farnley Falcons are one of the fastest growing teams in Leeds and now host under 7s, 8s, 9s, 10s and 11s junior age groups, with a number of girls registered with the club in the primary age groups.

Club Secretary at Farnley Falcons, Jonny Adams said: "We are delighted to be launching a Girls team.

"With a number of talented Girls already signed up at the club in Primary age groups, launching a new Girls team was the next natural step.

"As a club, we can't wait to start our journey into the fast-expanding female game."

Women and Girl’s Development Officer for the Leeds Rhinos Foundation commented on the importance of promoting girl’s sections at clubs in the city: “I’m delighted that another club has taken the step to incorporate a girl’s section.

“After playing with boys in the primary age groups, it is important that young girl players have an outlet to carry on their progression in the game when they are too old carry on playing in mixed rugby.

“With 16 girls coming along to the opening night, Farnley have a good foundation now to carry on recruiting and building the girl’s section and I look forward to supporting them as the club continues to progress.”

Farnley Falcons are also part of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s Club Ambassador Scheme, receiving all the benefits of being part of a network of over 30 clubs from the region overseen by Community Club Ambassador Sam Horner.

Clubs meet on a monthly basis to discuss their developmental needs, and receive benefits such as fund raising opportunities, invites to Rugby League dinners and junior rugby festivals, opportunities to be involved in the Leeds Rhinos matchday experience and chances for coaches to benefit from the Leeds Rhinos Coach Education programme, led by Rhinos coach Brian McDermott.

The new girl’s section will continue to train on Thursday night’s from 6-7pm. For more information, email Club Secretary Jonny Adams at jonny.adams@hotmail.co.uk
