The Yorkshire Cricket Foundation and Leeds Rhinos Foundation are delighted to announce that this year’s Children’s Day will take place on Sunday 19th July
Children’s Day is an annual event held across the cricket and rugby grounds at Headingley Carnegie Stadium with origins dating back as far back as 1922 when tens of thousands of people flocked to Soldiers’ Field at Roundhay Park to enjoy the day.
In 1946, just after the Second World War, it was reported that 96,000 people attended the event which today brings in around 6,000 people to the stadium.
In 2012 the day was delivered by the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation and Leeds Rhinos Foundation with support from the Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund, Leeds City Council, Leeds United Foundation and West Yorkshire Police who also use the event to deliver their open day.
Children’s Day is a historical event for the communities of Leeds and it is important for us that we uphold the tradition of the day and bring it back to its former glory.
Nick Robinson from the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation commented:
"The 2014 event saw attendances in excess of 5000 people who were entertained by cricket, rugby and football tournaments on the pitches, activities hosted by a number of Yorkshire based organisations; including The Works Skatepark, Manic Science, Snozone, Lightwater Valley, Thackray Medical Museum, Leeds Carnegie Basketball Club and many more! Guests were also treated to a free bouncy castle and free face painting throughout the day."
The Works Skatepark, who provided a BMX park as part of last year's festival are one of many local business and contributed to the success of the event said:
“Children’s Day is one of the best, most exciting family days of the year. Plenty going for people of all ages, both fun and exciting.”
The gates for the 2015 event open at 10:30am and close at 4pm; Admission is completely free for everyone, as are the activities when inside the ground. So bring the family and enjoy a fantastic day at Headingley Carnegie Stadium with Children’s Day, a Leeds summer event accessible to all.
