Community Club of the Week with MEARS: Kippax Welfare Juniors

This week’s Community Club of the Week, which is supported by our key partners Mears, is Kippax Welfare Juniors.

Kippax Welfare Juniors was originally started by two local brothers, Mick and Jack Kielty, and Dave Ellis around 1985. Over the last few years Kippax has continued to go from strength to strength.

Their list of players turning professional include Andy Lynch, Danny Orr, Gav Swinson, Mal Reilly and the legendary Roger Millward. Kippax are hoping this will increase in the future and this year, for the first time in a while, we have two of our older players on rugby scholarships with Castleford Tigers.

They now have nearly 200 players signed on, with teams from tots (3-5 years) to Under-15s. Last winter they had two age groups (Under-12s and Under-14s) in the BARLA Yorkshire Cup final with our u14s team successfully defending their title for the second year.  They are currently unbeaten in the BARLA National cup and hope to go all the way.

The club train and play from Kippax Welfare Sports and Social Club, but also use pitches at Kippax Common, to accommodate their growing numbers. Their training nights vary throughout the whole week but there is usually rugby going on somewhere!

As with all amateur clubs, they rely heavily upon volunteers and are extremely proud of their hardworking and dedicated coaching team, as well as all the other parent helpers who make every match day possible.

They will attend Rhinos Challenge at Skegness this weekend year and have their Under-10s and 15s taking part and are really looking forward to this popular and very well run event.
