The Leeds Rugby Foundation and Yorkshire Cricket Foundation are delighted to announce that this year’s Children’s Day will take place on Sunday 27th July.
Children’s Day is an annual event held across the cricket and rugby grounds at Headingley Carnegie Stadium. Its origins date as far back as 1922 when tens of thousands of people would flock to Soldiers’ Field at Roundhay Park to enjoy the day. In 1946, just after the Second World War, it was reported that 96,000 people attended.
In 2012 the day was delivered by the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation and Leeds Rugby Foundation with support from the Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund, Leeds City Council, Leeds United Foundation and West Yorkshire Police who also use the event to deliver their open day.
Nick Robinson from the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation said: “Children’s Day is a historical event for the communities of Leeds and it is important for us that we uphold the tradition of the day and bring it back to its former glory”
The 2013 event saw attendances in excess of 6000 people who were entertained by under 11 cricket, rugby and football tournaments on the pitches, activities hosted by a number of Yorkshire based organisations; new sports to try, face painters, interactive education such as Eureka and Jorvik, bouncy castles and even the chance to hold a snake courtesy of Flamingo Land!
“Last year’s event was a real highlight of the summer and we are hoping to make Children’s Day 2014 even bigger and better.” said Siobhan Walpole of the Leeds Rugby Foundation.
Exclusive to Children’s Day 2014 will be the rugby multi-skills zone which will offer children an insight into some core rugby league skills. A big thanks to partners Pims for purchasing this on behalf of LRF.
The gates open at 10:30am and close at 3pm; Admission is completely FREE for everyone, as are the activities when inside the ground. So bring the family and enjoy a fantastic day at Headingley Stadium with Children’s Day, a Leeds summer event accessible to all!
