Champion Schools Week 5 Round Up

South Leeds Academy Year 8 boys

Week five of the Leeds Champion Schools Tournament stages saw more action from the local finals taking place at Boddington Hall, with the year 8 and 9 boys finals taking place along with the Year 7 girls finals in the world’s biggest Rugby League knock-out competition for a chance to be crowned national champions in September 2016.

With a host of teams from the different year groups already through to represent Leeds in the Yorkshire stages of the RFL Champion Schools Tournament, week 5 would sort out which teams from the year 8 and 9 age groups in Leeds would also represent the city as the seeded teams in the Yorkshire Cup against school teams from across Yorkshire.

A round up of this week's results and qualifiers is below:

Tuesday 13th October @ Boddington Hall Y9 Boys Champion Schools

Results:
1st – Brigshaw
2nd- Mount St Mary’s
3rd- Corpus Christi Catholic College
4th- Cockburn School
5th- Farnley Academy
 
Brighsaw won 4 out of 4 games beating Mount St Mary’s by one try who won 3 out 4 games.
Top 5 go through to the Yorkshire Cup run by the RFL. All 5 qualified but were playing to be seeded 1 to 5 for the next stage of the competition.
 
Wednesday 14th October @ Leeds Rugby Academy Y7 Girls Champion Schools
Results:
1st – Farnley Academy
2nd- David Young Community Academy
3rd- Brigshaw School
4th- Cockburn School
 
David Young and Brigshaw finished level on points so the 2nd place qualifier was decided on by points difference where Brigshaw lost out by one try. Farnley Academy qualified in first place for Leeds winning all three games. The top two qualify to the regional stage of the girls competition run by the RFL.

Thursday 15th October @ Boddington Hall Y8 Boys Champion Schools

Results:

4th- Abbey Grange    

Group 2:
1st- Temple Moor School
2nd- Cockburn School 
3rd- Crawshaw Academy

In each group the top three progressed to the play offs for 1st- 5th seeding for the Yorkshire Cup.
 
The final standings after the play offs are:
1st- Corpus Christi Catholic College
2nd- Temple Moor School
3rd- Cockburn School
4th- Woodkirk Academy
5th- Crawshaw Academy
 
South Leeds missed out on a place in the next stage of the competition but did them selves proud reaching this stage with only 11 men.
 
The game for 1st and 2nd between Corpus Christi and Temple Moor was a cracker and was decided in golden point!

Next weeks Champion Schools action will see the Year 8 girls and year 7 boys complete the Leeds qualifying stages as they play out their local finals at Boddington Hall for a chance to represent Leeds in the Yorkshire Cup stages.
