In a Journey that started back in May 2012, Bruntcliffe High School’s Year 10 Rugby team are a couple of months and one huge leap away from reaching the record breaking pinnacle of Schoolboy Rugby League in becoming the City of Leeds first ever Champion School.
Bruntcliffe, coached by P.E teacher Ben Walker, become Leeds 7th team to reach the Champion Schools Final. The event this year is played on Friday 23rd August, one day prior to the Tetley’s Challenge Cup Final and Bruntcliffe will aim to go one step further than the rest and become national champions.
As part of the 3 Year Development Plan, Leeds Rugby Foundation and Leeds Rhinos are committed to both introducing more players to the game but also progressing the best of the talent in the city in order to nurture the next crop of emerging stars that the Leeds Rhinos are showing on a weekly basis in the Super League.
Leeds Rugby Foundation’s High School Development Officer and Leeds Rhinos Scholarship Coach Danny Edmondson will assist Mr Walker in coaching the team right through the summer up to the final.
The team will also be offered an opportunity to train at Kirkstall Rugby Academy, home of the Rhinos training facility and last Monday night a bucket collection was organised which rose over £400 to put towards costs of travel and accommodation.
Leeds Rugby Foundation’s High School Development Officer and Leeds Rhinos Scholarship Coach Danny Edmondson commented: "This is a fantastic acheivement for the lads and we now hope they can triumph in the Champion Schol's Final in August.
"I am certainly looking forward to coaching them and they all deserve the chance to train on the Leeds Rhinos training pitch at Kirkstall. I hope they embrace the opportunity and walk away as National Champions!"
