Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s Active Social programme run in partnership with Morrison’s Foundation will be taking place at three locations in 2018 providing social physical activity sessions for more people in the city.
The programme, which has run since 2016 at Emerald Headingley Stadium before moving to the Cardigan Centre in Headingley in October 2017, provides a vital service for people over the age of 55, combatting social issues such as inactivity, isolation and loneliness.
With new programmes starting at the O.P.A.L Welcome In from the 10th January and the St Cyprian with St James Church Hall from 23rd February along with a continuing service running from the Cardigan Centre in Headingly from the 9th January, Leeds Rhinos Foundation are hoping to target more people in different areas of the city with activities to improve their physical and mental wellbeing this year.
The free two-hour sessions provide a wide variety of activities including beginner's yoga, tai chi and chair-based exercise, dance based exercise along with taster ping pong and walking netball and rugby, all offered to encourage physical activity and peer interaction with people of a similar age.
Leeds Rhinos Foundation Health Improvement Officer Laura Buckle said:
“We are continuing to grow our health pillar year on year with the support of our partners and following the success of the programme running principally out of the Headingley area, we are pleased to now be able to offer the Rhinos Active Social in both the Harehills and Horsforth areas.
“The programme is for anyone over the age of 55 who wants to get a bit more active but also for people to socialise and interact with peers. Having a weekly outlet for people to look forward to in their local community is really important and a big part of improving health outcomes both locally and nationally.”
Rhinos Active Social will be available from the following dates:
– Tuesday 10am-12:30pm at the Cardigan Centre. 145-149 Cardigan Road, LS6 1LJ (Starting January 9th 2018)
