The Leeds Rhinos Foundation hosted the qualifying rounds of the Leeds City Wide Tag Tournament for the Leeds South and Central Sports Partnership at Hunslet Warriors last Thursday with 22 schools taking part in the biggest regional qualifying festival of the tournament so far
Staff from the Leeds Rhinos Foundation once again worked alongside School Games organiser Helen Holdsworth to deliver the tournament for the year 5 and 6 pupils from the South central partnership hosted by the Hunslet Warriors.
Under the usual format of the qualifying tournaments the children were taught how to play tag rugby in a coaching carousel involving a series of stations on different rugby skills, before playing out the tournament in the afternoon.
Due to the amount of schools taking part, the tournament was played in a league format, splitting the teams into different groups to progress to a play-off situation that created four qualifiers for the City Wide Tag Tournament.
The teams qualifying were Blackgate Primary School, Rothwell St Marys Primary, St Anthony’s Primary School and Sharp Lane Primary School who all progress to City Wide Tag Tournament Final based at the John Charles Centre for Sport in May.
Leeds Rhinos Community Manager; Jonny Wainhouse who coordinated the tournament commented:
“This is another example of partnerships coming together to benefit the next generation of children in the south of the city. Schools and their pupils have become more familiar of Hunslet Warriors which will hopefully attract more players and on top of that the children have had a positive experience and been active at a community setting.
"We would like to say a massive thank you to the teachers who brought the children, Hunslet Warriors for the use of their facilities, Zak Hardaker for attending and joining in with the children and one last thank you to Helen Holdsworth who went out of her way to engage as many schools as possible into this event.”
