As part of Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s commitment to preserve, protect and publicise the rich and varied heritage of Rugby League, our Heritage Committee has completed the task of giving a unique number to every player who has made a single appearance for the Leeds.
Throughout the year the committee will present former players with their Heritage Number and at the recent fixture between Leeds Rhinos and Wakefield the following players were awarded their certificates.
Marty Gurr – 1180 Wigan (a) 4 October 1987
We are delighted to welcome Australian Marty Gurr back to Headingley Carnegie this afternoon. Marty started his career at Easts where he played 77 games between 1979 and 1983, playing in two State of Origin games in 1983. He then moved to Manly, where he played four seasons with the Sea Eagles, making 45 appearances, winning a reserve grade Grand Final in his final year. He was one of five Australians at Leeds that season, along with Steve Morris, Cliff Lyons, Peter Tunks and Peter Jackson. He crossed for a try on his debut in a defeat to Wigan at Central Park and went on to collect 11 tries in 28 out of a possible 32 appearances in his only season at the club. He is remembered also for an unforgettable tackle which saved the game on Henderson Gill in the John Player Trophy semi final win over Wigan at Bolton.
Mark Conway – 1116 Castleford (a) 5 Sept 1982
A Colts international before he made his debut with Leeds, Mark Conway spent five seasons at Leeds making 115 appearances, 96 of which were in the starting line up.
Originally from Stanley Rangers ARLFC, he emerged as a youngster at Leeds in the early 1980s. He faced competition from Kevin Dick and Cliff Lyons during his time at Leeds before a move to his hometown club, Wakefield in August 1987 saw him establish himself as a force in the game. He still holds the most conversions in a match record at Wakefield Trinity. He is sixth on the all-time Wakefield Trinity goal kicking list, and fourth on the all-time Wakefield Trinity points scoring list.
David Creasser – 1124 Batley (a) 4 Sept 1983
David Creasser is ninth in the all time list of points scorers in the club’s history and is one of only 13 players to ever score over 1,000 career points for the club. He amassed 1,073 points between 1983 and 1992. A Hunslet Parkside team mate of Garry Schofied, he was highlighted as one of the future stars of the game as a junior. A mainstay of the Leeds team in the 1980s when fit, a series of debilitating injuries including dislocating his right shoulder five times, preventing him from gaining more international honours. He retired at the end of the 1992-93 season before a brief return at Keighley was also ended by injury. In total, he made 225 appearances for Leeds.
