New Try Club programmes available this June

Make a positive change in your life with Try Club

As the nation prepares for national Men’s Health Week on the 12th June, Leeds Rhinos Foundation are pleased to be able to offer two new Try Club Men’s Health Management programmes at Headingley Carnegie Stadium and West Leeds ARLFC

The free health programme, run in partnership with Leeds Public Health, aims to offer education on healthy eating as well as combining that with regular physical activity to equip members with the knowledge to continue to maintain their healthy lifestyle after completion of the 12-week course.

After three more successful programmes in 2017 so far including the charity’s first Try Club based in the community at East Leeds ARLFC, the two new programmes will run again from the Captain’s Lounge at Headingley Carnegie Stadium and at West Leeds Sports and Social Club.

Offering a weekly 1-and-a-half-hour session splitting classroom learning with physical activity, the club has already seen a number of success stories through the programme’s focus on making lasting behaviour changes to maintain health goals during and after completion of the course.

Delivered by staff from Leeds Rhinos Foundation trained in delivering community health programmes, Try Club provides free resources throughout the course including handbooks for keeping food and exercise diaries and monitoring goals along with a regular health information on food labelling, portion sizes, hydration and principles of good diet and fitness.

Try Club participant Michael Dalby said:

“Having more knowledge about food and what’s good for me and what isn’t really woke me up to a lot of things but basically a change in diet has meant that each week I’ve actually lost a bit of weight, so half a stone overall in 12 weeks and I’ve never been able to do that on my own.”

The course has also helped Michael recover from long term injuries affecting his movement which has been achieved through tailored exercises offered throughout the programme:

“My breathing is an awful lot better because I am an asthma sufferer and I’m also recovering from a partially collapsed lung, broken ribs and a broken collar bone which left me with restricted movement in my arm, I’ve got most of that back because of the simple and effective exercises learnt here, added Michael.”

Commenting on the appeal of the programme he said:

“I’ve always worked alone as a rep by myself but here I’ve worked as a team and that has been brilliant but also the knowledge that is imparted to you has been a real highlight because making simple changes does make all the difference and this course has helped me to get there, so I can’t speak highly enough of the programme.”

The new 12-week programmes will start on 26th June from 1:30-3pm at West Leeds and the 28th June from 6-7:30pm at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.
