As Leeds Rhinos and Coventry Bears did battle on the pitch last week as part of the Bears’ 20 year celebrations, Leeds Rhinos Foundation joined up with the Bear’s community team to help promote Rugby League to local school St Mary’s and St Benedict
Staff from Leeds Rhinos’ official charity joined the Rhinos first team contingent on the trip down the M1 last week to join in with Coventry Bears community work taking place on the day in the build up to the game.
Working alongside Troy Perkins, who delivers Sky Try sessions in the community working alongside the Bears in primary schools in and around the Warwickshire area, Rhinos Foundation coaches ran some coaching in a P.E lesson at St Mary’s and St Benedict School also delivering an assembly for the whole school involving club mascot Ronnie the Rhino.
Speaking about the day Perkins said: “The presence of having the Leeds Rhinos in Coventry is fantastic.
“The kids have loved having the experience of different coaches from the Rhinos Foundation with us and also Ronnie the Rhinos who made an appearance as well.”
The sessions provided an ideal build up to the friendly game between the Bears and Rhinos last Friday at Butts Park Arena, which celebrated the 20th anniversary of the club, who play in the BetFred League One competition.
Leeds Rhinos have an official West Midlands Supporter Branch based out of Coventry Bears run by Ambassador and Coventry Bears Vice-President, Michael Shires. The branch who were in attendance at the game will also be looking to enjoy a third consecutive trip to a Leeds Rhinos game in 2018 when they visit Elland Road for The Clash against Castleford Tigers on 23rd March.
