Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s Run with the Rhinos fundraisers were provided with some pre and post race advice as part of a bespoke training session from Friend of the Foundation L1 Performance in preparation for the upcoming Asda Foundation Leeds 10k last week.
Owner at L1 Performance, Kyle Harris and his team at tailored the educational and practical training evening at the state-of-the-art gym located at Wellington Place in Leeds City Centre for all fundraisers who are running on behalf of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation and have raised over £250 to support the charity.
The evening started with an introduction from Kyle and Physio expert Ove Indergaard, highlighting common mistakes made by athletes, the use of a running plan/log and giving us a beginners guide to listening to your body.
The action kicked off with a group warm up from Ove, comprising of movements to loosen hips and increase flexibility, before the group were split into small groups to work through some squats and lunges as well as, the addition of a sled push, highlighting the importance of cross training.
The session then moved onto some circuit training delivered by personal trainer Simon which included Kettle bells, mountain climbers, push-ups, lunges and power bags.
To aid in loosening up before and after the 10k, the group were also shown the benefits of foam roller exercises to target calves, hamstrings and the iliotibial band. Led by trainer Dom, the period also highlighted the use of foam rollers for day to day use, not just for athletes, in recovery from injuries and injury prevention.
Rhinos stars Cameron Smith and Brett Delaney were also on hand for a Q&A session for runners to ask any questions about recovery, nutrition and best practice. Brett shared his recovery plan after gruelling matches and further emphasised the importance of listening to your body and pacing yourself.
Kyle’s team will also supporting the Leeds 10k event on 10th July at the post-race meet up held at Banyan Bar, where runners can share their experiences over some replenishments with L1 performance providing FREE massages to help with recovery.
