Launching this September Leeds Rhinos Foundation, in partnership with Yorkshire Cancer Research, will be running their Active Beyond Cancer programme, for people looking to build back the fitness following cancer treatment.
In March 2017, the two charities came together to launch the cancer rehabilitation programme and following a successful pilot programme with a women's group they will now be expanding the programme and running courses for men and women at three venues across Leeds.
Active Beyond Cancer is a free 12-week programme for people who have been affected by cancer and aims to rebuild fitness by increasing and maintaining physical activity, boost confidence, improve health and wellbeing and reduce the risk of recurrence and other long-term health conditions.
Working with Leeds City Council, the programme will be run at three locations from 25th September Armley, Rothwell and Fearnville leisure centres with a female only, male only and mixed groups available.
The programme is suitable for all people affected by cancer at any point, whether recently diagnosed, receiving treatment or in post-treatment who will be able to take part in a variety of physical activities tailored to the needs of their group from Zumba Gold, Thai Chi, ballroom dancing classes to walking rugby, group exercise circuits and chair exercises.
Adam Lunn, Programme Leader at Leeds Rhinos Foundation said: "The pilot programme has been a huge success, with participants improving their levels of physical activity, well-being and reducing their level of fatigue and with some feedback from the group we have fine-tuned the service further and are now looking forward to supporting more men and women going forward.
"The programme offers a range of benefits from things as simple as peer support to up to date information on health, diet and exercise with lots of taster activities to try, then as part of the legacy attendees can continue to build their confidence and health, making use of their gym inductions and subsidised access to exercise sessions across the city.”
Joe Taylor, Partnerships Manager at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said: "We are delighted to be working with Leeds Rhinos Foundation to offer our Active Beyond Cancer programme to more patients in the Leeds area. There are currently about 190,000 people in Yorkshire living with or beyond a cancer diagnosis who all have emotional, physical and practical needs that go beyond medical care. We are dedicated to providing patients with the very best information and advice so that they feel better supported and go on to live long and healthy lives.”
The programme is available through self-referrals via Leeds Rhinos Foundation's health practitioners where you can receive further information on our three Tea and Talk information events, referral process, programme start dates, times and locations.
