Local MP Greg Mulholland took to the streets of Leeds today to tackle the congestion on the road to Headingley Carnegie Stadium. He was joined by Leeds Rhinos legend, Keith Senior and Living Streets’ Project Coordinator, John Kilner.
Living Streets who led the 'audit' of the route up to the stadium, is the national charity that stands up for pedestrians who work to create safe, attractive and enjoyable streets for the public. Throughout their 85 year history, Living Streets campaigns have led to the introduction of the driving test, pedestrian crossings and 30mph speed limits.
The Liberal Democrat MP for Leeds North West, who is a big sports fan and a Vice President of the Leeds Rugby Foundation and took part in the walk, explained:
‘'The stadium is home to the two sports closest to Yorkshire hearts, rugby and cricket, but a 20,000 capacity crowd turning up for a big match not only creates serious traffic congestion, but can significantly impact on the local neighbourhood and the lives of the people who live here.
‘'As well as calling for better and appropriate public transport to bring fans from further afield to matches, more people walking to the game, at least for part of their journey, would go a long way to alleviating congestion. Living Streets is already working with the council to make Leeds a more walkable city, so taking part in their Community Street Audit today, is a good way to see how we can make it safer and easier for people to get to the stadium, enjoy the sport and not have to face the frustration of a traffic jam on the way home.’'
John Kilner from Living Streets added:
‘'We are working in the harder to reach areas of Leeds, trying to make walking safer and easier for everyone. Tackling issues such as pavement parking, ensuring there are safe crossing points for people and plenty of time to allow them to cross at pedestrian crossings, are all simple measures which make walking a safer and more appealing option for short trips.’’
Leeds Rhinos legend Keith Senior who supported the walk on behalf of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation commented:
'‘Walking can be a quicker, easier and less stressful way to get to the ground. Of course walking is also an excellent exercise for all of us no matter what our age or fitness level, so it’s an opportunity to boost your physical activity levels and do yourself some good at the same time.'’
