Foundation launch university internship across Leeds

As the UK celebrates national volunteers week, Leeds Rhinos Foundation have partnered with Leeds Trinity University and Leeds Beckett University to offer opportunities for students to become part of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation internship

The internship allows students to work regularly with the Foundation supported by a professional development programme headed by Sue Harrison, former head teacher at Colton Primary School.

Gareth Cook, Community Manager for Leeds Rhinos Foundation said:

"The internship programme provides a structure for students to understand the ethos and culture of the charity whilst gaining valuable experience in the sports charity sector. Roles include work across primary school physical education, rugby league development and health and well being.

"Rather than providing a placement we are offering a robust opportunity for students to really embrace that will ultimately lead to employment with the Foundation. I would like to thank the universities for their support and also Sue who is volunteering her time to support us."

Sue Harrison, former head teacher at Colton said:

“As an ex-head teacher, class teacher and PE teacher, it is a delight to work in an advisory capacity alongside Gareth and the Leeds Rhinos Foundation team, helping to promote sport and sporting activities within the community to build shape and sustain healthy lifestyles."

The internship has been well received by students with over 25 applying for roles so far and a shortlist being drawn up for the successful students to start their internships from September 2017.

Kay Bastable, Carnegie School of Sport Employability Coordinator commented on the internship opportunity:

"On behalf of Carnegie School of Sport at Leeds Beckett University we are excited about the budding partnership with the Leeds Rhinos Foundation. We hope that our collaboration will benefit both parties supporting the fantastic work done in the community by the Foundation, at the same time as providing our students some valuable experiences to enhance their professional development."

The roles will start September 2017 with a plan to provide further opportunities in the near future.
