Leeds Rhinos Foundation staff along with Leeds Active Schools delivered a Key Stage 1 Rugby Fundamentals event at John Charles Centre for Sport on Friday 21st April
The event involved over 130 kids throughout the morning coming from Primary Schools across Leeds all taking part in a series of stations delivered by staff from Leeds Rhinos Foundation with help from six high school sports leaders.
Kids were split into eight different groups, where they took part in a group warm up before taking part in 4 x 20 mins skills stations designed to demonstrate the grip and carry, rugby relay races, passing races, try scoring, play the balls and tag rugby matches.
School Partnership Officer Dane Weatherill commented on the day:
‘It was brilliant to see so many kids on what turned out the be not the best day weather wise enjoying the whole morning which lasted nearly 2 hours! Just want to say a massive well done to all schools which took part and hope everyone enjoyed it as much as the Foundation staff & active schools did!’
Leeds Rhinos Foundation and Active School Leeds have been in partnership since October 2016 providing a new offer and provision for the city, which has seen the appointment of two Active School Locality Co-ordinators working in local school clusters.
Under the new partnership schools working in clusters can pool their sports premium funding to create a unique programme that meets the needs of each school whilst implementing and delivering an inspiring programme for children and young people to lead an active lifestyle.
The new offer has already seen Horsforth and the Inner East Leeds school clusters take up the offer taking up the opportunity to come together from both primary and secondary schools to create a local model focusing on curriculum PE sessions within schools, enrichment opportunities after school, competitions and teacher CPD.
