Full sporting programme on offer in the Armley Schools cluster

Year 4 boys enjoying indoor Hockey at Swallow Hill Community College

Primary Schools in Armley have taken part in two multi-sports events in the month of January, held at Partner School Swallow Hill Community College, and organised by their Cluster Lead Officer Richard Cattley.

The two multi-sport events have seen over 100 children taking part on consecutive Thursdays, with an event for both the year 4 girls and year 4 boys from the Armley area.

Each event catered for the pupils of the seven cluster schools, all of which are Leeds Rhinos Foundation partner schools including: Armley Primary, Castleton, Christ Church, Five Lanes, Holy Family, St Bart’s and Whingate.

The multi-sports events involved the pupils in three different sports in dodgeball, bench ball and hockey, offering a range of activities for the pupils to take part in, following on from mixed Tag Rugby, mixed Netball and mixed, Boys and girls Football events that all took place before Christmas.

Each school that attended took part in all the sports on offer, playing fixtures against every other school, in a busy schedule of fixtures. The pressure of running and organising the event was however made easier for Richard, who once again had sports leaders from Swallow Hill Community College on hand to lend their assistance.

“These events are all about getting the students active through sporting events but above all else it’s about having fun. As usual, the sports leaders from Swallow Hill were excellent and the event, just like the many events we’ve held this school year, wouldn’t have been able to happen without them” Richard added.

“What makes these events special is that it brings together the community of Armley with some friendly sporting activity. The idea behind some of the sports we included is that it give students that may not be as able in traditional sports, such as Rugby and Football, the chance to represent their school at a sporting event. It also helps the students become familiar with Swallow Hill as many of them will progress there when they leave their primary schools”.

Next up for the Armley cluster Schools is the Key stage 2 Girls netball tournament and a Sports Hall Athletics events all coming in the next two weeks.
