Historic memorabilia on display at City of Leeds Rugby League Reunion lunch

The 1928 Tour cap of our Challenge Cup winning captain Jim Brough will be on display

On Sunday 25th September, Rugby League fans are invited to take a trip down memory lane at a City of Leeds Rugby League Reunion lunch at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

Organised jointly by the Leeds Rhinos Foundation and Rhinos Players Association, and supported by Hunslet and Bramley, the event aims to encourage anyone who has been involved as a player, coach, teacher, administrator, match official, helper or fan to contact former colleagues and start your own reunion.

There will also be an opportunity for guests to view historic memorabilia that was recently discovered locked away behind the visitors changing rooms under the stadium’s Main Stand.  Some of the hidden gems that have been found are the 1928 Tour cap of our Challenge Cup winning captain Jim Brough, the club’s original boardroom table, team photographs, the original prospectus for shares in the club and the memorandum and articles of purchase of Lot 17A.

Special guests will include former coach Leeds, Dewsbury and Bramley coach Maurice Bamford, ex-referee Bernard Shooman, ex-teachers Ken Bond and Stephen Boothroyd.

Speaking about the reunion lunch, Leeds Rhinos Chief Executive, Gary Hetherington said: “This event aims to encourage anyone who has been involved as a player, coach, teacher, administrator, match official, helper or fan, to contact former colleagues and start their own reunion.  Team sport is fantastic at bringing people together but often as our lives change we lose touch with those who we have played alongside and this event is a great occasion for anyone who has been connected with the game in Leeds to come together and reminisce about shared memories around our game.

“The recent discovery of memorabilia significant to the history of our club has come at the perfect time and we can now share this with guests at the lunch, who may able to shed some light on some of the items we have found or help us identify some of the players in the pictures.

“We look forward to welcoming the city’s rugby league community, past and present.  It promises to be a very special, nostalgic, Rugby League occasion, with good food and company from so many who have contributed to Rugby League in Leeds over the years.”

The lunch starts at 11am and tickets are £25 and include a three course lunch.  For tickets email Keiran.smith@leedsrhinosfoundation.org
