Leeds Rhinos Foundation are supporting a number of clubs to launch their under 7s teams for the 2017 season with a series of Sky Try Taster Rugby League sessions at clubs across the city this term.
Leeds Rhinos Foundation Rugby League Development Officers in the four corners of the city are currently working in schools with the year 1 and 2 year groups providing introductory rugby lessons as part of the children's P.E curriculum to signpost new players to four Taster sessions taking place in February.
Leeds Rhinos' official charity received funding from Sky Try in 2015 as a ground breaking new partnership initiative between the RFL, Sky and over 20 Rugby League Foundations to help grow the game. Since then Leeds Rhinos Foundation have increased the number of Under 7s age groups at community clubs from 3 to 20 at the start of 2017, with more plans to offer support to all 25 Leeds clubs this year.
In the North of the city, North Leeds Development Officer Joe Sanderson will be supporting Guiseley Rangers with a Taster Session on the 8th February. Joe is working in schools in the Guiseley and Rawdon area this term with the club perfectly located for year 1 and 2 pupils from any of the LS19, LS20, LS29 and LS21 postcodes.
Leeds Rhinos Foundation South Leeds Development Officer Richard Tate will be hoping to boost numbers at Hunslet Club Parkside two days later on 10th February running a Sky Try Taster Session on the back of his work in schools in the Hunslet area.
The tasters will take a different format on the 10th with an under 8s session from 4.30pm-5.30pm and under 7’s from 5.30pm-6.30pm.
Rugby League is thriving in South Leeds with more tasters also planned for Methley Warriors, Beeston Broncos, Hunslet Warriors, LS27 Spartans and Oulton Raiders over the coming months.
East Leeds Development Officer Ian Hardman will complete a busy week for the charity's Rugby development staff with a Taster session at Garforth Tigers also on the 10th February. The session will be suitable for children in the LS25 area or from the outskirts of the city heading East.
West Leeds club Farnley Falcons, will be supported by West Leeds Development Officer Callum Tolson in the West of the city one day earlier on the 9th February following delivery in a host of primary schools in the LS12 area.
The Falcons will also be running a Taster session for their rapidly growing Girl's section later in February with Women and Girls Development Officer Lois Forsell running a session for girls in Secondary school years 6,7,8 and 9 on the 25th.
Lois, will also be supporting Oulton Raidettes girls team with a Taster Session on 7th February and West Leeds on the 8th February followed by a session at East Leeds on the 4th March to help inspire more girls players to get involved in the game.
