Champions of Leeds winners full of praise for new Leeds and Hunslet Competition format

David Young Community Academy Year 11s

David Young Community Academy were full of praise for the Leeds Rhinos Foundation after winning the Champions of Leeds competition at John Charles Centre for Sport last night, commending the new set up for the competition in 2015-16 devised by Competitions Coordinator Lois Forsell

The Leeds Rhinos Foundation restructured the competition for the new academic year to allow more competition and opportunity for development from more game time for schools rugby teams across Leeds following up the RFL’s Champion Schools competition with the Leeds and Hunslet schools plate and playoff competitions running through November.

Organised by Leeds Rhinos Foundation Competitions Coordinator Lois Forsell, the competitions have provided the chance for schools who were unsuccessful in their bid to represent Leeds in the RFL Champion Schools national knockout competition, a chance to compete in more fixtures against their Leeds school counterparts during the school year.

Under the new format for 2015-16, the winners of the Leeds and Hunslet Schools Plate competition progress to play Leeds schools who advanced through the RFL’s Champion Schools Leeds qualifiers earlier in the term and the chance to become Champion of Champions at the finals at John Charles Centre for Sport.

David Young Community Academy year 11s were one of the first teams to be crowned Leeds Champion of Champions yesterday winning their final against South Leeds Academy with a 23-6 win and collecting the Hector Crowther Leeds and Hunslet Schools trophy.

Head of Physical Education at the Academy Chris Tully commented:

“On behalf of the PE department at DYCA, I'd just like to say thank you to you and all at the Foundation who have been involved in the organisation and running of the schools' tournaments over the last few months, for both boys and girls.

“The tournaments we have attended have always been well organised and communicated in plenty of time and the finals at John Charles Centre tonight were great. We think that this new set-up has worked really well and has provided a great opportunity for our students to increase their competition against a range of other schools involved. I'm sure that your work will go from strength to strength.

“We look forward to more tournaments in the future and will support the work of the Rhinos Foundation where ever possible.”

The year 7, 8 and 9 Leeds and Hunslet Schools Finals will take place on 9th December at John Charles Centre for Sport.
