Changing teenagers lives through rugby coaching

Breeze Sports Academy

Leeds Rugby Foundation has just completed a 6 week young leaders course with Year 10 students from the Leeds City Council’s ‘Breeze Sports Academy’. Throughout the course the students have learnt how to coach young children and deliver safe, fun sessions. This resulted in a primary school tag festival which was held at the John Charles Centre for Sport with pupils from Middleton St Mary’s Primary School. The pupils were coached by the breeze students in the morning and then played a tag tournament in the afternoon.

The course is used by Leeds Rugby Foundation as a way to engage young people and use coaching as a way to increase their confidence and build skills that they can use back in education.  This is the second time the Foundation has worked with the breeze project this school year 2011/2012 and the results are looking really positive.  Several of the pupils have now enrolled on the rugby league level 2 NVQ course that is run by Leeds City College and supported by Leeds Rugby Foundation.

Danny Edmondson from Leeds Rugby Foundation who delivered the course commented, “Over the 6 weeks there has been a massive improvement in the confidence and ability of the young leaders.  They’ve delivered a great tournament today and if they continue to apply themselves in this way, they will all have a positive future ahead of them”.
