Leeds Rhinos Foundation and Batley Bulldogs have joined forces to expand rugby league development opportunities across the Heavy Woollen district, supporting young players, strengthening community clubs at grassroots level and providing valuable education for coaches.
The new partnership will form part of the Foundation’s Rugby League Development Plan, helping more boys and girls access the game, develop their skills and remain involved in the game.
The partnership officially launched last week with a training session for Under 14s and Under 15s boys from Batley Boys, Thornhill, Dewsbury Moor, Dewsbury Celtic and Shaw Cross. The players took part in a session led by Leeds Rhinos legend Danny McGuire and Batley Bulldogs Head Coach James Ford.
With the Heavy Woollen district having a proud rugby league heritage and a wealth of local talent, the partnership aims to build stronger pathways for young players whilst giving community coaches access to further education, support and development opportunities.
Dan Busfield, Head of Partnerships at Leeds Rhinos Foundation, said: “We are delighted to announce a partnership with Batley Bulldogs. The Heavy Woollen area has always been a hotbed of rugby league talent, and we want to support clubs to engage with and retain young people in our game.
“Our community coaches and volunteers are the backbone of grassroots rugby league, dedicating so much of their time to helping players develop. By working together, we can give them the tools and knowledge to continue making a difference, whilst creating more opportunities for the next generation to thrive.”
Leeds Rhinos Foundation and Batley Bulldogs are also encouraging businesses looking to expand their social value and make a positive difference in local communities to get behind the initiative. Support from local businesses will help create more opportunities for young people, strengthen grassroots rugby league and ensure the game continues to flourish across the Heavy Woollen district.
