Foundation helping local community organisations to deliver hot meals for elderly residents

Staff from Leeds Rhinos Foundation have been volunteering their time and working in partnership with local community organisations New Wortley Community Association, St George’s Crypt and Mecca Bingo Leeds to help deliver hot meals and food parcels for elderly residents left isolated.

With already insecure supply chains due to the COVID-19 pandemic and all donations down compared with their last reporting year, the Crypt could have found it a challenge to provide a substantial meal for everyone. With the cold weather looming, there are few things more important for homeless and vulnerably housed people than a filling, nutritious meal.

The use of Leeds Rhinos Foundation’s minibus has been a great help to the charity, enabling them to easily transport and deliver these meals around the city to some of the most vulnerable and at-risk individuals, including those supported by the New Wortley Community Association social hub.

With Foundation hub also playing their part in helping to package up the meals, it has proven to be a real team effort and incredibly worthwhile for all involved. It has also given them the important opportunity to complete check-ins and have a friendly chat with the residents, vital at a time like this when loneliness and social isolation is proving to be a key challenge for older people during the health crisis.

A huge well done to all the staff involved for all their hard work and continued commitment to supporting our community in any way possible during these incredibly difficult and strange times.
