Leeds Rhinos Foundation partners with City of Maths to deliver sport-based learning for Leeds primary schools

The Leeds Rhinos Foundation has announced a partnership with City of Maths as part of a new education programme launched in January 2026 across Leeds.

City of Maths is a two-year programme designed to support students, teachers, families and communities through a range of activities, events and classroom resources focused on mathematics education.

Through the partnership, Leeds Rhinos Foundation will contribute a series of sport-based learning activities and experiences aimed at Key Stage 2 primary school pupils.

A co-designed digital resource pack will be developed for primary schools, consisting of six lesson plans.

The resources will be designed for KS2 pupils and will deliver maths content through sport and physical activity. The lessons will be suitable for delivery as part of PE lessons, linking mathematical concepts with exercise and sport-based examples.

As part of the programme, 10 stadium tours will be delivered at AMT Headingley Stadium for school groups with higher levels of pupil premium and where added maths enrichment will have most impact, and will include structured activities that incorporate maths-based tasks linked to sport and the stadium.

Pupils who take part in the stadium tours, along with participating teachers, will be invited to attend a Leeds Rhinos home match during the 2026 season.

Pupils will take part in match day activity organised by Leeds Rhinos Foundation, including a pitch-side parade either before the match or at half time. Information about the project and the City of Maths programme will also be included in a matchday programme.

The partnership will also contribute to a series of careers videos being produced by the City of Maths programme.

The City of Maths team will interview data analysts working in rugby league and netball, providing examples of how mathematical skills are used within professional sport. These videos will be shared with schools across Leeds for use in classrooms and school assemblies.

The partnership forms part of the wider City of Maths programme, which will run for two years from January 2026 and will deliver activities and resources across the city.

Commenting on the partnership, Head of Community and Engagement at the Leeds Rhinos Foundation, Gareth Cook, said : “We’re delighted to be collaborating with the City of Maths to deliver a programme in Leeds that raises aspirations linked to numeracy.

“Using the brand of the Leeds Rhinos, we will work with local schools to provide maths themed PE resources, offer stadium tours with maths themed content, and provide careers and guidance to secondary school pupils about the important role maths plays in a number of jobs linked to both the club and Foundation.

“We are really excited to be working with experts at City of Maths to have a long-term impact on young people throughout the city.”

Dr Ruth Holland, Head of Maths and Schools at City of Maths, added:

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with the Leeds Rhinos and Leeds Rhinos Foundation on this exciting programme. Sport is a powerful way to bring maths to life – whether it’s analysing performance data, understanding scoring systems, or exploring patterns and strategy on the field, maths underpins so much of what happens in the game.

“Through engaging classroom resources, exciting stadium experiences, and inspiring career insights, we’re excited about helping more children across Leeds see the value of maths in new and meaningful ways through one of the region’s most popular sporting organisations.”
