Rugby Football League launches #FitToPlay initiative for players

Following the success of #SkillToPlay, the Rugby Football League are now introducing the #FitToPlay initiative to help young people through the Covid-19 lockdown – this time aimed at a slightly older demographic, including secondary school pupils and college and university students.

The RFL launched #SkillToPlay two weeks ago, and it’s already proved a big hit with the young (and not so young) taking the chance to practise and show off their Rugby League related skills at home.

The #FitToPlay programme – again launched to support Sport England’s drive to keep the nation active #stayinworkout – will provide home workouts, athletic development and other activities to help students and adults keep in shape for the future return to rugby.

Marc Lovering, the RFL’s Director of Participation and Development, said: “Right now, physical activity and keeping fit is more important than ever.
“We’re all now spending more time at home. For those who feel well enough, we want to continue to provide guidance, recommendations and opportunities for the players in our game.

“For regular Rugby League players, and those progressing in the sport, #FitToPlay is an opportunity to try some new fitness and conditioning activities and be ready to go before the action starts up again.

“There will be loads of free online Rugby League resources for everyone, and some great prizes to win. You’ll feel better for it, you’ll be a better player for it – and have a good time in the process.

“The #FitToPlay programme will connect with our #SkillToPlay initiative, giving youngsters the chance to take some ownership of their own development, towards becoming fit, athletic, free-thinking and expressive players for life.

“Some of the game’s best players are getting involved, and we hope that will help to inspire our stars of the future, to make the most of every day in this unusual and challenging period of time.”

The RFL will be running a weekly leaderboard, with prizes for the top three – and the first #FitToPlay challenge is the standing long jump. Fans of the game can also watch classic matches and have access to mental fitness resources.
