TRY CLUB

Who is Try Club for?

This programme is aimed at men with a BMI over 30 who may feel unsure about joining a sports club, gym, or fitness programme. It’s ideal for those who want a supportive, non-intimidating environment to increase activity, receive nutritional guidance and build long-term healthy habits.

When and Where?

Try Club will run four cohorts throughout 2026, each lasting 12 weeks at AMT Headingley Stadium. Each weekly session lasts 90 minutes to 2 hours and is equally split between healthy living education and physical activity, giving participants practical guidance alongside enjoyable, active sessions.

What Makes Try Club Different?

  • Inclusive and supportive: No previous rugby experience required.
  • Balanced and structured: Equal focus on fitness and healthy lifestyle education to promote long-term change.
  • Fun and social: Walking rugby and introductory rugby league sessions suit different fitness levels, helping men ease into exercise at their own pace.
  • Accessible: Sessions are free, held at An easily accessible venue and designed to remove barriers of cost, confidence and intimidation.
  • Community-informed: Participants are encouraged to continue activity beyond the project through local clubs, sports groups and social connections.

In the short term, the programme aims to help men who haven’t exercised in a long time become active again, engaging at least 100 participants across the year. Within the first few weeks, participants often notice improvements in energy, fitness, confidence and general well-being.

Over the longer term, Try Club aims to build lasting habits, enabling participants to continue being active beyond the sessions whilst forming friendships and a support network.
