Changing Lives Through Sport

Primary Schools

Primary SchoolsLeeds Rhinos Foundation work with schools across Leeds, delivering projects that give pupils the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of rugby, grow in confidence and have fun. Our staff, who are all qualified coaches, work closely with schools to deliver activities that will benefit their students. Using the powerful impact of sport we are able to inspire children to live healthy lifestyles, understand the importance of team work and offer unforgettable experiences for the children such as meeting Rhinos players, visiting Headingley Carnegie Stadium and taking part in pre-match flag bearing ceremonies at Rhinos home games.

Below is a taster of some of the work we are able to deliver in schools

Assembly

Leeds Rhinos are one of the most successful teams in the history of Rugby League and in the last ten years have enjoyed a Golden Decade that has seen them win Super League titles, the World Club Challenge Trophy and a brace of Challenge Cups with a team made up of local heroes.

Using the Rhinos' team as a case study, the Foundation staff are able to give an inspiring talk to pupils on either 'Creating a Winning Team' or 'Healthy Lifestyles.'

Staff with the help of the famous Leeds Rhinos Mascot Ronnie the Rhino deliver engaging and memorable assemblies, looking at the qualities the Rhinos' players have demonstrated to make them so successful.

Coaching Programme

We have various options available to primary schools, such as tag rugby coaching, dance and multi skills delivery - all of which can be tailored to suit the needs of the school and age of the children.

To receive a copy of the brochure which outlines all our available programmes, please contact Adam.Lunn@leedsrhinosfoundation.org

Rugby Festivals

Rugby Festivals combine both the assembly talks and coaching programme, and culminates with a rugby festival where the school is invited to play against fellow schools at an amateur club setting. This is great fun for all and allows the children to use the skills they have learned during the coaching sessions in a special tournament.

Dance Coaching

In 2014, the Leeds Rhinos Foundation added dance coaching to our range of activities that we are able to offer Primary School children.

Dance is now a huge part of the Leeds Rhinos experience, with the club having a professional Dance Team performance at every home game as well as their own Rhinestones Dance Academy for young dancers. Led by the Foundation's Dance Development Officer, Nicola Booth, who is also the Dance Captain for the Rhinos' Spencer Properties Dance team we are able to offer either a six session dance coaching programme or a one day tailored dance workshop.

School Ambassador Scheme

Leeds Rhinos Foundation is dedicated to supporting our local Schools and one of the best ways we are able to do this is through our School Ambassador Scheme. There are a number of incentives offered to schools who are part of the Ambassador Scheme, such as group trips to watch the Rhinos, player visits and opportunities to take part in match day activity on the Headingley Carnegie Stadium pitch.

For further information on the scheme and its benefits please contact lisa.mccann@leedsrhinosfoundation.org

Stadium Tour

Educational tours of Headingley Carnegie Stadium, targeted at Primary School Children are now offered by the Leeds Rhinos Foundation as part of our commitment to learning and education.

Under the initiative children will receive a tour of the Headingley facilities including exclusive behind the scenes access. Students will learn from members of the Foundation team through a series of interactive activities designed to excite and engage students from Key Stage 2.

The Primary School stadium tour has been designed to be fun and educational and to provide students with a trip to remember. Children will have the chance to step into the players' footsteps with a tour of the pre-match facilities and the dressing room before emerging from the tunnel and into a team song, led by Ronnie the Rhino. There is also the chance to take part in the post-match press conference and face the media.

If you would like any further details on the tours please contact lisa.mccann@leedsrhinosfoundation.org

Heart of Gold

The 'Heart of Gold' project is run in partnership with Heart Research UK. The six week programme covers three weekly sessions of multi-skill physical activities themed around street games, two weekly healthy heart education workshops and to conclude the children will accumulate their newly learnt knowledge, to deliver a pupil-lead healthy hearts assembly to their peers at school.

As part of the legacy of the project, each child participating will receive a free pack of collectable Top Trumps cards which they can continue to play and spread the heart health message with friends and family. These playground cards, which use numerical data to compete against opponents, feature players from their 'Golden Decade' - the period between 2004 and 2014. Under the pillars of Health and Education, each card promotes their own positive heart healthy message.
