Leeds Rhinos Foundation is pleased to announce that Mark Butterill has been appointed as the inaugural Community Coach Educator.
Butterill, who is also head coach for the scholarship team at the Leeds Rhinos Academy, will be working on a one-to-one basis with targeted community coaches to offer personal mentoring and support.

Along with providing education on player welfare and safeguarding, Butterill will also help coaches to design and implement age specific coach education programmes and deliver engaging sessions in a more personal setting to enhance the Coach Education offer to ambassador clubs.

Speaking about the role, Butterill said: "I'm really excited by the content that is going to be delivered. I think it is a first for the game of Rugby League in this country and hopefully the feedback will be positive and interest will grow.

"As a club and a foundation, we are passionate about making community clubs strong and improving standards within the game, so I think this programme will only add to the great work that the Leeds Rhinos Foundation team already do."

Raising standards in the community game is at the heart of Leeds Rhinos Foundation's Rugby League Development Plan, which is supported by Mears Group. As Community Coach Educator, Butterill will contribute to this aim by focusing on the development of coaches within our ambassador clubs.

He added: "I always promised myself that once I was in a position to do so, I would look to help as many community coaches as possible. Sharing knowledge, best practice and developing skill sets is so crucial as they can then pass these skill-sets onto their players and others at the club.

"It is definitely something I'm passionate about and a vision I put forward to Dan Busfield at Leeds Rhinos Foundation around six months ago. Thankfully Dan shared my vision, and the funding is now in place to support me on this first part of the journey."

Busfield, Head of Partnerships at Leeds Rhinos Foundation, said: "We are always looking to raise standards within our game, therefore appointing Mark to work more closely to develop community club coaches made complete sense. Mark is an experienced and quality coach who understands both the professional pathway and the community game.

"We firmly believe that sharing information on coaching and embedding the DNA of the Rhinos out into community clubs will ultimately benefit the game as a whole."
