Change4Life launches new sugar swaps campaign to help families cut back on sugar

Leeds Rhinos Foundation is supporting the latest Change4Life campaign- 'Make a swap when you shop'- to help parents swap foods high in sugar with healthy alternatives.

New figures from Public Health England show that children in England are consuming around 2,800 excess sugar cubes each year; more than double the maximum recommended amount.

Too much sugar is bad for children's health as it can lead to the build-up of harmful fat on the inside that we can't see. This fat can cause weight gain and serious diseases like type 2 diabetes, which people are getting younger than ever before, heart disease and some cancers. Too much sugar can also cause painful tooth decay, with more than 30 per cent of five-year-olds in Leeds currently suffering with decay.

The campaign aims to highlight how easy it is for families to cut back on sugar by simply making a few simple swaps to their everyday food and drinks. Items that contribute to a child's high sugar intake include confectionery, biscuits, cakes, desserts, sugary drinks, higher-sugar breakfast cereals and higher-sugar yoghurts. Many retailers will be highlighting healthier options in-store by using the new Change4Life 'good choice' badge to make it even easier for families to make healthier choices.

Primary school age children will also receive a free take-home pack from school in mid-January. The pack takes children on an 'Adventure in Sugar Smart World' and features fun games and stickers to get children to spot the higher-sugar food and drinks and choose healthier swaps. It also provides easy tips on everyday sugar swaps for the whole family.
